Vietnam – Thailand ties elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
During Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s recent visit to Hanoi, Vietnam and Thailand officially upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) — making Thailand the 13th country and the 4th in Southeast Asia (after Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia) to establish CSP ties with Vietnam.
- With bilateral trade already surpassing $20 billion, the two countries are now targeting $25 billion in the near future.
- Thailand is Vietnam’s largest trading partner within ASEAN, with over 750 Thai-invested projects in Vietnam totaling ~$14 billion.
- New cooperation deals span trade, education, tech, and infrastructure — including a semiconductor training agreement between FPT and Khon Kaen University and a new industrial park in Hung Yen with WHA Group.
- Beyond business, both sides are reinforcing ties in defense, logistics, tourism, and anti-crime efforts.
This comprehensive strategic partnership upgrade underscores Vietnam’s growing diplomatic influence and economic relevance in the region — and its central role in shaping ASEAN’s future.
