US semiconductor manufacturer Coherent inaugurates its third Vietnam facility

Coherent Corp., a leading semiconductor producer in the U.S., on Monday inaugurated its third Vietnam factory, located in the southern province of Dong Nai.

The new facility Coherent Nhon Trach, with an initial investment capital of $127 million, came following the ones in Binh Duong and Bac Ninh provinces.

It will produce precision-engineered materials and photonics components used in a wide range of applications, from smartphones and electric vehicles to advanced medical devices.

Earlier, the corporation had proposed to invest in three high-tech projects in Nhon Trach industrial parks 1 and 2, including a silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor production project; an advanced optics project; and a project for metrology, testing, and semiconductor component manufacturing (M-Cubed).

Their total initial registered capital amounts to nearly $1 billion, with annual production value expected to reach over $1.2 billion.

In 2024, Dong Nai authorities granted investment certificates for these projects. Shortly afterward, Coherent began construction of the Coherent Nhon Trach factory in Nhon Trach Industrial Park 1.

Coherentโ€™s presence in Vietnam dates back to 2005, when it built a manufacturing facility in the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park 1 (VSIP1) in former Binh Duong province (now part of Ho Chi Minh City after their merger).

In late 2010, the corporation established a branch in the northern region. In 2019, it inaugurated a facility in the Yen Phong Industrial Park in Bac Ninh province.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung asked the corporation to deepen its investment, especially in high value-added stages of the global semiconductor value chain.

He also suggested that Coherent place greater emphasis on training and employing high-quality human resources in Vietnam, while strengthening partnerships with universities and research institutes to develop a comprehensive and sustainable innovation ecosystem.
